Kung Hei Fatt Choy!!! We usher in the year of the PIG! Oink! It's my Mom's year :) I'll have to wait for another 6 more years before it's my year...the year of the Dragon. I hope you guys are enjoying yourselves in Ipoh without me...man, I wished I could be home to enjoy those delicious dishes and also to collect all my ang-pows!
Over here on the other hand...most of the celebrations are held in Chinatown. It started at the beginning of February where every weekend, there was always something going on either at the Chinese Cultural Center or in Chinatown itself. This weekend, I was at both places and just this weekend alone, I think it's the most times I've seen the lion dance performances all at once! I remember when I was younger, I used to be afraid of it but I'd still want to watch it. Every time I hear the drums, I'll quickly rush over to watch it. On Friday, just before my afternoon class, I was having lunch when I heard the drums. They were closeby and I was told that they will perform at the restaurant I was at. At first I figured I'd eat slowly and be able to see them up close but they were taking forever so instead I ate as fast as I could and then followed them down the street to take pictures.
After class, I walked over to the Chinese Cultural Center and there I was able to see another lion dance along with this year's Narcissus Queen, Jessica Lau and her court. I didn't stay too long and was on my way towards Chinatown when I see them block off Maunakea Street. I ask someone and she said there's going to be some lion dance performance. I was psyched and decided to stay. Boy I must say it was a good decision because you have to check this out! There must have been about 20 or even more lion dance clubs performing along Maunakea and King Street. It was so exciting to not only see one club perform but several at one time and it became really, really LOUD as they were lighting up many red firecrackers too! Then today, I met Ritsuko in Chinatown again to watch the parade along Hotel Street before walking down along Maunakea Street to check out the food vendors where we bought some yummilicious Coconut Jin Dui and freshly squeezed sugarcane drink! Simply refreshing!
