Waking up to another earthquake at 7.07am ~ we felt the bed, the walls and the building rock and shake for more than a minute and it made some items fall off the shelves in the apartment! Ryan tried to wake me up but I thought I was dreaming as I was really tired and as I held on to Ryan's hand...I suddenly realize what had happened. We quickly got dressed and went downstairs to the parking lot just to be safe...and while down there, the ground started to shake again. The weather wasn't helping either as it was raining hard!
My friend from Malaysia and her's from Japan are here on Oahu for vacation and we'd planned to take them around the island today. They're staying at Ala Moana Hotel but I could not contact them as the phone system (T-Mobile) was down...so to make sure they were alright, we drove down there, looked around the lobby area and finally walked up 11 flight of stairs to their room. They were fine, they decided to stay in their rooms so Ryan and I drove out to Waialua to be with Ryan's grandpa. It was not advicable to be on the roads as the stop lights were not working and we had to yield at every four-way junction. Some were driving crazy and fast ~ not wanting to stop to give way. Idiots!! When we finally got to Waialua, his granpda was fine and we found one radio station (KSSK) was up and running so we tuned in to find out what was going on.
According to the news, there were 2 earthquakes that started on the Big Island; the first one registered at a 6.6 magnitude on the Richter Scale, and then the second smaller 5.8 magnitude tremor (I'm guessing that's the one we felt when we were downstairs by the building parking lot) and they reported we will continue to experience aftershocks through Monday.
The last time Hawaii had a quake of this magnitude was November 16, 1983, when a 6.7-magnitude temblor injured six people and 39 houses suffered major damage, according to the USGS.
Earthquakes like this are not uncommon for the Hawaiian islands and this quake knocked out power to all of the islands. Power was slowly restored on the Big Island, Maui and Kauai in the afternon while here on Oahu, only several parts of Pearl City and Aiea got power back. We came home around 2-3ish in the afternoon, took a short nap, sat around in the living room waiting for the power to come back on and finally litting up several candle around the apartment as it got darker. Power wasn't restored back at the apartment until about 9-ish at night and we tuned in to the news on cable and also the internet to find out more information.
What an experience...(yes I was scared!!) but thankfully we're safe and sound!
