Monday ~ The alarm goes off at 2.30am! We stir and I have a hard time waking up (being that we only went to bed at midnight after watching Charlie & the Chocolate Factory on HBO)...R must have hit the snooze button at least 5 times before finally getting out of bed. Why are we getting up at such an ungodly hour you ask? Well, R, his parents and I had planned to drive up to the top of Maui's inactive volcano, Haleakala, to view the sunrise. Initially I wanted to do the sunset but figured the sunrise would have been much better. Sunrise at Haleakala ~ by most accounts it is the No. 1 thing to do when visiting Maui. We left the house around 3.30am and it took us about a good hour and half before getting to the summit area. It was freezing cold up there with temperatures ranging between 40 to 50 degrees F. but that did not stop me fom finding a good spot. Standing in the chilly darkness...we waited for the sunrise as the unrelenting cold winds nibbled on our flesh. It was simply spectacular to witness what some describe as a once in a lifetime experience.
