Yep...It's Punahou Carnival time again! It's considered the state's largest such event that draws thousands of people each year. The two-day event raises money for the school and is held on campus. Since parking is limited and my odds of being so lucky to actually find a parking spot are minuscule, we decided to walk. I guess I'm a little lucky that I live in Makiki and my apartment is less than a few miles from the campus...so the walk there was rather nice.
As I walked onto the campus, the scent of malassadas filled my senses. I knew that before I left the carnival that I would stop to have at least one or two. It was also really crowded too! There was great games for all ages, exciting E. K. Fernandez rides and delicious food everywhere! Hawaiian plate, portuguese bean soup, chili, nachos and greek gyros sandwiches to name a few and let's not forget the famous Malassadas!
Malassadas, it's a Portuguese donut without the hole. The warm, sugar-coated ball of fried eggy dough, heavier than a true doughnut, is relished for its mouth-watering goodness. We bought a bag of dozen malassadas and only seven was remaining by the time we got home! They were very onolicious! Go get yours...the carnival stays open until 11pm tonight...
