I attempted a little experiment this past Saturday afternoon to test my baking skills. It's been a while since I baked but it did come out tasting great! What's better than homemade pie? There's nothing like a fresh pie for dessert at a special occasion or just to make an average day special.


4 eggs, separated
2 c. milk, scalded
1 c. sugar (according to taste)
4 tbsp. flour, plain
1 tbsp. melted butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. nutmeg (optional)
1 (9 in.) unbaked deep dish pie crust


Separate eggs, mix sugar and flour together; add milk, butter, egg yolks and vanilla. Place all of this in a deep dish pie crust. Sprinkle top with nutmeg if needed and put in preheated 400 degree oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 275 degrees and bake for 50 minutes until custard is firm or until knife comes out clean, cool on wire rack.

Toppings (optional)

Beat egg white and add 4 tablespoons of sugar for a meringue. Put on top of cooked pie and put back under boiler to brown a little. For variations leave off nutmeg and add 1 cup of coconut and 1 teaspoon of vanilla flavor. Add a little coconut on top of meringue. For chocolate pie add 4 tablespoons of cocoa, leave off nutmeg and add 1 teaspoon vanilla.

I didn't add any toppings on mine and all I can say for my first attempt is that it tasted much better than it looked! The crust was a little overburnt but still good! LOL! We ate half on Saturday night after dinner and finished the rest on Sunday night...YUM!!
