It dawned on me recently that no one calls me "miss" anymore! When did I stop being a "miss" and start being a "ma'am"? I answer a bulk of the rental calls at the office, and I am being called "ma'am" by most of the people calling in. Personally, I hate and cannot stand being called "ma'am" because it makes me feel ancient! It makes me feel like I should be a mean old lady to those people ~ well, not really ~ as I won't snap at the people who say it. But it is a bit aggravating.
Sure you may argue with me and say its just people being polite. Not. I don't find that polite! That's an insult! An insult to me...call me silly but that's how I feel
For Christ sake, I am twenty nine years old. Does that not qualify as a "miss". I'll even take "lady" or "bitch" but "Ma'am"! But here's the thing: At what age do you go from being a Miss to being a Ma'am? Isn't that what you call someone their sixties? I would refer to a woman as "ma'am" if they were blocking me with their shopping cart full of arthritis medicine, Depends, Caltrate, and V-8 Juice. A "Ma'am" is like your old Aunt who wears straw hats and sunglass shields over her glasses. They're your female relative who still dresses, 30 years later, like they did when they were a Rolling Stones fan in high school! Frick, am I considered a "ma'am" now because I sound or look old?
