According to forecasters with the National Weather Service, Hurricane Flossie, now a Category 2 hurricane, will bring tropical storm force winds and waves as high as 25 feet to the southern parts of the Big Island of Hawaii today.
At 5 a.m. today, the center of Flossie was located near latitude 16.9 north, longitude 154.1 west, or about 205 miles southeast of Hilo, and 390 miles southeast of Honolulu.
Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 40 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds (from 39-74 mph) extend outward up to 145 miles.
Yesterday, Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim declared a state of emergency for the Big Island. Kim urged residents to listen to local radio stations for announcements on evacuations, school closures and other storm related information.
As for R and myself here on Oahu...we've been preparing ourselves too as a pre-caution with bottled water, non-perishable food, candles/flashlights/batteries, etc. I had a hard time sleeping last night because of the rather loud sounds from the strong gusty winds and rain hitting against my bedroom windows. After an hour of tossing and turning, I reached over to grab my trusted Ipod to help me sleep...
