I'm a few days late but here's wishing you "Happy Lei Day" which was on May 1st. Hawaiians celebrate Lei Day, symbolizing their tradition of friendliness. In Waikiki, a big event was held in honor of this local holiday. It was an all-day event complete with hula dancing, musical performances by the amazing Brothers Cazimero and of course a lei competition at the Waikiki Shell at Queen Kapiolani Park! Remember a lei is always given with a kiss and a smile!
A big mango fresh off the tree is worth approximately $1.50 here on the islands! Yeah...it is that expensive and I wish we had a mango tree in our backyard. Wait...what backyard? I live in an apartment building. Anywaes...yesterday while watching the news on TV, a man is sentenced to a one-year jail term for stealing 300 pounds of mangoes from a Mokuleia farm last year. Mangoes? Who goes to jail for that? In this case, he's being punished under a new state law that treats agricultural theft as a felony instead of a misdemeanor. The law carries a possible maximum prison sentence of five years. Lesson to be learnt here: don't steal!
Then, this morning while reading the newspaper, I learned that Haagen-Dazs is taking on an international flair. It introduced a new line of ice cream; the Haagen-Dazs Reserve Series, in a limited number of markets in March...including stores in Hawaii. They include Hawaiian Lehua Honey and Sweet Cream, Pomegranate Chip, Amazon Valley Chocolate, Toasted Coconut Sesame Brittle, Pomegranate and Dark Chocolate Bar and Brazilian Acai Berry Sorbet. It describes the Hawaii inspired flavor as "a rich sweet cream ice cream blended with Hawaiian lehua honey. The lehua blossom imparts a subtle floral note to the ice cream, which is complemented by the sweet cream." How cool is that? I hope to try it the next time I am closeby to a Haaden-Dazs store or if I see it being sold in the grocery store :)
