Ryan and I were up early on Saturday morning. We decided to take the scenic route and tour part of the islands before making our final stop at Ryan's grandpa's house in Waialua. From H-1, we got onto Likelike Highway and drove toward the mountains; passing through the Wilson tunnel and as you exit the tunnel...emerges a spectacular view of the Windward side. Then we veered left onto Kahekili Highway; which later on becomes Kamehameha Highway after passing through the end of Kaneohe. We made our first stop at Kualoa Park, a beautiful beach park with stirring views of the mountains and Chinaman's Hat.
No drive to the North Shore is complete without a meal at one of the shrimp stands that have sprouted along the Kamehameha Highway. The most famous, oldest and highly recommended one is none other than Giovanni's in Kahuku (next to the Kahuku Sugar Mill). The last time that I ate there was about 2 years ago and I simply had to satisfy my cravings.
You can order 3 styles of shrimp; #1: Scampi (simply amazing!), #2: (Super) Hot & Spicy and lastly #3: Lemon & Butter. My order...a plate of 12 scampi style shrimp with loads of garlic. Sinful? You bet, but worth every mouthful! If you're a shrimp lover, be sure to try the scampi from Giovanni's either at Kahuku or Haleiwa. Yum!!!
