DIM SUM! It's been awhile since I've eaten some and I figured I'd write a little something about it and hopefully will be able to ease my cravings for it. If you've never had it, dim sum is a Chinese culinary tradition typically served during brunch hours, where a series of small appetizer-like dishes rolls past your table in a more or less constant stream. Each little dish looks different than the next and when you see something that you like, just point and it's yours.
DIM SUM DO'S AND DON'T(S)
Eating dim sum is best enjoyed with as many friends as possible, and being adventurous is a prerequisite.
Mastery of the chopsticks is essential. Chopsticks are used for most dishes, including spring rolls, as most old-school Chinese frown on the use of hands to take food off the table.
Use your own saucer for sauce, and don't dip your chopsticks into the communal bowl.
Buns such as lotus seed puree buns can be eaten without chopsticks - you need to feel the food and tear the tiny little buns with your fingers to enjoy the full experience of eating.
It's considered polite to help the guest of honor first to the choicest dishes, and you never fill your cup with tea before checking that everyone else's cup is filled.
Tea is normally the only thing to drink with the meal unless someone orders beer.
Tapping the table with three fingers is a form of good manners, to say thank you to the person who fills your cup. It's not an impatient gesture to the waitperson.
Always balance the lid of the teapot on the handle as a sign that the pot needs to be refilled.
Finally, it's also considered polite to make a big fuss about trying to be the one to pay the bill. Or that's what I think since it happens whenever we're out eating with my relatives!
